An EV is not a combustion car with a different drive

Electric vehicles differ technically and in their materials from combustion cars, and those differences act directly on care. Treating an EV like any other car rarely goes fundamentally wrong, but it gives away durability and in some places risks real damage.

Four differences that matter in care

Torque and weight

EVs have instant torque and are usually heavier. That means higher tyre wear, greater load on the wheels and faster soiling of the lower body. Why this also affects the paint is covered in why electric cars load paint differently.

More sensitive plastics

Many models have matt plastic surfaces, sensitive charging flaps, special seals and aerodynamic parts. These react sensitively to aggressive cleaners and to products intended for painted surfaces.

Large displays and soft interior surfaces

Large touchscreens, piano lacquer, sensor surfaces and soft-touch materials define the interior. All four are scratch-sensitive, dust-attracting and care-intensive, and all four show every mistake in low light.

Thinner clear coats

Many manufacturers use thinner clear coats, matt paints and sensitive metallic effects. They react more strongly to UV, micro scratches and to a badly executed polish. This is the point where a care mistake becomes paint damage.

Outside: by hand, not through the installation

Electric vehicles should preferably be washed by hand. The reason lies in the thinner clear coats: brush installations cause micro scratches that accumulate faster on a thin clear coat and are harder to correct. On top of that, matt paints must not be polished at all, so a later correction is simply not available.

Wheels

Through recuperation EVs produce less brake dust, but through high torque more mechanical load. What matters is regular wheel cleaning, acid-free cleaners and wheel protection against baking-on.

Glass

Many models have large windscreens and panoramic roofs, so more area and higher visibility demands. Sensible measures are a glass coating, antistatic cleaning and consistent removal of insect residue.

Inside: the most sensitive zone

The interior of an electric vehicle is technically more complex and materially more sensitive than that of a comparable combustion car.

Large touchscreens need antistatic cleaners and soft microfibre cloths. Alcohol-based products do not belong on them because they attack coatings. Mistakes show as streaks, micro scratches and in the worse case as sensor failures.

Piano lacquer surfaces are extremely scratch-sensitive and attract dust. The same rule applies as for the paint outside: wiping dry produces exactly the marks you were trying to avoid.

With sensor surfaces and controls: no aggressive cleaners, no wet cloths, no silicone-based products.

Protection: where the effort pays most

Because the paints are thinner and the materials more sensitive, protection works above average on electric vehicles. A ceramic coating provides UV stability, protection against micro scratches, a water-repellent surface and therefore considerably easier cleaning. It is particularly useful on matt paints, thin clear coats and sensitive metallics, although matt surfaces need a system of their own.

The five mistakes we see most often

First the brush wash, because micro scratches form faster on thin clear coats. Second aggressive cleaners, which attack plastic, displays and sensor surfaces. Fourth the wrong cloths, which leave visible traces on piano lacquer and displays. And fifth protection without preparation, because a coating does not adhere properly to unprepared paint and locks in the existing condition.

Through the year

Electric vehicles follow the same annual rhythm as other cars, with one shift: in summer UV protection for paint and interior counts more, in winter the salt load on a heavier vehicle. In summary

Electric vehicles need material-appropriate, structured care. By hand rather than through the installation, material-appropriate products rather than universal cleaners, protection early rather than correction late. Those three decisions avoid almost all the typical damage.
