Car polish

Car polish smooths and corrects the paint surface. Depending on the compound, pad and machine, it can reduce fine scratches, oxidation and dull areas without placing unnecessary stress on the paint.

Polish or paint cleanser

A paint cleanser removes contamination, fallout and bonded particles. A polish works mechanically on the paint finish. In practice the two steps complement each other, but they are not interchangeable.

Polishing interval

For normal use, polishing once or twice a year is usually sufficient. Paint condition, washing habits and the desired result matter more than a fixed calendar interval.

Removing scratches

Fine wash marks and surface scratches can often be reduced substantially or removed. Deeper scratches reaching the primer or base coat require repainting, spot repair or a separate assessment.

Hand and machine polishing

Hand polishing suits light defects and sensitive areas. Machine polishing provides repeatable correction, an even finish and controlled gloss.

Holograms

Holograms are visible linear reflections caused by uneven machine movement or an unsuitable finishing process. They show most clearly in sunlight or under LED light and can be corrected with a proper finishing polish.

Rotary and dual-action polishers

Rotary machines create strong correction through a fixed rotating motion. Dual-action machines oscillate and offer greater control. Both can be appropriate when matched to the paint hardness and defect pattern.

Cutting and finishing polish

Cutting compounds correct stronger defects with coarser abrasives. Finishing polishes refine the surface, remove polishing marks and restore depth to the paint.

Typical paint defects

Swirls, RIDs, car-wash marks, oxidation, holograms and clear-coat haze all affect how light reflects from the surface. They are most visible in sunlight or under controlled workshop lighting.

Polishing pads

Cutting pads increase correction, medium pads support lighter correction and finishing pads refine gloss. Hardness, cell structure and material determine the mechanical energy transferred to the paint.

A one-step process combines correction and finish. Two stages separate defect removal from gloss refinement. Three stages suit paintwork whose defects, hardness and target finish require a more detailed process.

Filler finish

A filler finish hides defects optically instead of removing them. Marks can return after the first washes. We prefer measurable correction to short-lived cosmetic improvement.

Matte paint

Matte paint must not be polished like gloss paint. Polishing smooths its open texture and creates irreversible shine, so cleaning and protection need to be matched carefully to the material.

Spot polishing

Spot polishing corrects a small local area, such as an isolated RID or scratch. It avoids unnecessary paint removal across the rest of the panel.

Polishing through the clear coat

A polished-through area appears dull, reveals base coat or loses reflection. The damage is irreversible and requires repainting, which is why remaining paint thickness is assessed before correction.

Before correction, paint thickness is measured digitally in micrometres. This indicates the available material reserve and how much correction is sensible without putting the clear coat at risk.

CeramiClear is an especially hard, ceramic-reinforced clear coat used by some manufacturers. It requires different compounds, pads and heat management from conventional clear coats, so the paint is assessed first.

A paint-protection treatment forms a protective layer over vehicle paint. It helps resist UV exposure, dirt, chemicals and weather, and can improve gloss, ease of maintenance and durability.

Wax offers short-term gloss and protection. A paint sealant or coating usually forms a more stable layer and can last considerably longer, depending on the system, preparation and aftercare.

Ceramic systems form a dense, hard protective structure with strong chemical resistance. They demand especially thorough preparation and are not automatically the right choice for every vehicle.

Hydrophobicity describes water-repellent behaviour. A well-prepared protective layer helps water bead and run off faster and reduces dirt adhesion, but it does not replace careful washing.

PTFE / Teflon sealant

A PTFE or Teflon sealant uses fluorinated polymers to create a very slick, dirt-repellent surface with a soft, deep gloss. It eases cleaning but does not provide scratch protection and lasts less than ceramic or acrylic systems.

Spray sealant

A spray sealant is applied and spread after washing. It gives immediate water repellence and supports regular maintenance, but lasts only a few weeks and does not replace a cured protection system.

Detailing products

Detailers refresh gloss quickly, reduce light smearing and briefly enhance water repellence. They provide neither mechanical protection nor long-term coating, but work well between maintenance intervals.

Gloss enhancers intensify depth and colour and are usually applied as the final step after polishing. Their purpose is visual improvement rather than protection.

Wax

Waxes made from natural ingredients such as carnauba or from synthetic components create a warm, soft gloss. At roughly four to eight weeks, they are the shortest-lived protection system and suit vehicles where appearance is the priority.

Paint protection film (PPF) and self-healing

Transparent paint protection film absorbs stone chips and scratches before they reach the paint. Modern films use a thermoplastic surface whose fine marks close under heat, and the film can be removed cleanly when the vehicle is sold.
