Electric cars are designed for winter operation. Cold weather still affects battery chemistry, cabin heating and charging, so the journey may need different planning.

Expect range and charging to change

Cold batteries can accept and deliver energy differently. The effect varies with temperature, battery design, pre-conditioning, speed and trip length; universal minus-40-degree or fixed-energy figures are not useful.

Use the vehicle’s controls

Schedule pre-conditioning while connected where supported and follow the manufacturer's charging guidance. Not every EV includes the same app, heat pump or parking heater.

Heat efficiently without sacrificing safety

Seat and steering-wheel heating may use less energy than warming the whole cabin, but windows must remain clear and occupants comfortable. Do not reduce demisting to preserve range.

Prepare the rest of the car

Suitable tyres, clear glass, sound wipers, lighting and inspected brakes remain essential. Route planning should include current charger availability and a cold-weather reserve.

Winter suitability depends on the complete vehicle and journey, not on drivetrain stereotypes.
