Why insect residue attacks the paint.
Insect residue consists largely of protein and chitin. Under heat the protein coagulates and the chitin hardens, so the residue bonds with the warm clear coat and behaves on the surface like a mildly etching acid. That is why the front of a car after a summer drive is not only a cosmetic matter.
Fresh residue can be dissolved gently with the right cleaner. If the paint was hot, however, the residue bakes in and leaves defects in the clear coat. At that point the work moves from the contamination to the paint itself. We first assess how deep the marks sit and say openly how much of it can still be recovered.
When it fits
Timing decides the effort.
Whether cleaning is enough or the clear coat has to be worked depends on how long the residue sat on the paint and how warm the surface was.
When the drive has just ended.
Residue that is still soft can be released with dwell time and a suitable cleaner, without working the paint.
When the paint was hot.
After heat the residue sits within the clear coat. Dull points or fine depressions remain, and cleaning no longer resolves them.
When polishing or coating follows.
The surface must be free of residue before polishing and protection, otherwise the contamination is sealed in.
Process
From cleaning to a decision.
We always begin with the gentler option and only then decide whether the clear coat needs work.
Assess
On the cooled surface we check whether the residue still sits on top or has already bonded with the clear coat.
Release
A suitable cleaner and dwell time soften the residue so it can be lifted without rubbing the paint.
Correct
Where defects remain in the clear coat, targeted polishing follows. For heavier damage we use micro-sanding.
Control
The result is checked under light. Whatever remains visible is discussed openly before any further step.
Honest assessment
What insect removal cannot do.
Cleaning lifts what sits on the paint. It does not restore a clear coat that heat and acid have already attacked.
Once insect residue has baked in, improvement is only possible through polishing or, for heavier damage, micro-sanding. Both reduce the marks but cannot always remove them completely. How much is achievable depends on the depth of the defect and the available paint reserve. Where the material removed would not justify the result, we advise against it and say so beforehand. The most effective factor remains timing: the less time the residue spends on warm paint, the less it leaves behind.
