Paint protects vehicle panels, while contamination, washing and weather affect its appearance over time.

Polish uses abrasives to level a very small part of the upper paint layer. It can reduce wash marks and oxidation but cannot repair chips or scratches through the colour.

There is no sound rule to polish once every year. Wash, decontaminate and inspect first, then correct only when the expected improvement justifies abrasion.

A reliable process includes cleaning, defect assessment, a conservative test area, correction, finishing and optional protection.

Hand polishing offers limited correction. Dual-action and rotary machines require compatible pads, compounds and heat control.

Wax, sealant or coating can support the refined finish, but protection is a separate stage with its own maintenance. AVP will recommend cleaning or repair instead where polishing is not useful.
