Do not top off the tank

Use the correct fuel and stop at the first automatic nozzle shut-off unless the vehicle or station gives different instructions. Repeatedly adding fuel can overwhelm the designed expansion space or vapour system.

Respond safely to a spill

Stop fuelling, avoid ignition sources and alert station staff immediately. Follow their emergency procedure and do not spread sand or another improvised absorbent without instruction.

If fuel reaches paint, safety and spill control come first. Once the area is declared safe, rinse or clean it according to the vehicle and product guidance without allowing runoff into drains.

Investigate repeated overflow

Fuel leaking after a normal fill may indicate a fault in the filler, tank or vapour system. Move away from hazards, contact appropriate assistance and do not continue driving if safety is uncertain.

Heat is another reason not to top off, but the automatic shut-off remains the practical rule in every season.
