Polishing machines require practice and control. Their advantage over hand work is not simply greater “depth”, but the ability to move an abrasive consistently across the surface and correct defects more efficiently.

The vehicle must be washed and decontaminated first. Sensitive unpainted trim is masked where necessary, and the paint is inspected before a pad touches it.

Pressure depends on machine, pad, compound and correction stage. The tool should be controlled without forcing it into the surface, and the pad must remain flat wherever the panel shape allows.

Edges and raised body lines often carry less paint and build heat quickly. They are measured, masked or treated conservatively rather than polished with the same passes as a broad flat panel.

Movement and working time need to remain consistent. Pads are cleaned frequently, panel temperature is monitored and residue is inspected under direct light.

Glass, unpainted plastics and specialist finishes may be machine-polished only with products and processes approved for those exact materials. They should not be included in an ordinary paint process.

Professional machine polishing combines equipment with judgement. The specialist must know when a defect has improved enough and when continuing would remove more material than the result justifies.
