Winter storage: preparing a car properly
Why standing still is harder on a car than driving
A car that sits does not wear out. That is true of the mechanics and still misleading, because the damage we see in spring on laid-up cars almost never comes from movement. It comes from standing in the wrong place with the wrong preparation.
The reason is that storage preserves whatever was there when the car went in. Put a convertible into the garage dirty in November and in March you have the same insect residue, tree sap and bird droppings on the paint, except now they have had four months to work. Driving would at least have washed some of it off.
Which cars are worth laying up at all?
Convertibles, classics, seasonal cars on interchangeable plates, sports cars on unsuitable tyres, and second cars that stand through winter anyway. For a daily driver that keeps running, the effort is unnecessary. That is about winter protection, not winter storage.
The order that makes the difference
With winter storage the sequence matters more than any individual step. Clean before protection, dry before covered, interior before the cover goes on. Reverse the order and you seal in exactly what you meant to keep out.
In practice that means a thorough wash, then paint decontamination and correction where needed, then protection, then interior cleaning and drying, and only at the very end the cover.
The paint before the break
Everything corrosive should come off the paint before storage. Bird droppings, tree sap, insect residue and industrial fallout keep working whether the car moves or not. Under warm autumn sun in a closed garage they etch in faster, not slower.
Where something has already etched, the moment before storage is the right time to deal with it. Sap, cement and limescale removal and, if needed, polishing afterwards belong in autumn rather than spring, because the car then goes into the break already protected.
As protection for a storage period, paint preservation is right in most cases. It lays a film on cleaned paint that stays stable for months. For cars that should be protected not just this winter but continuously, sealing is the more durable route, because it carries the following season too.
Is washing before storage really necessary?
Yes, and more thoroughly than for a normal wash. The places that matter are the ones usually skipped: door shuts, fuel filler, wheel arches, the underside of the tailgate. Water stands there, and in a closed garage it dries more slowly than outdoors.
Equally important is that the car is completely dry before the cover goes on. A damp car under a cover is a humidity chamber for four months.
The roof on a convertible
Fabric roofs are the most sensitive part of a stored convertible. They need three things: clean, dry, and stored closed.
Closed matters because a roof folded for months develops creases along the fold lines that never fully recover. Dry matters because fabric mildews when damp. And clean matters because organic residue in the weave turns into stains over winter that will not come out later.
Convertible roof care before storage cleans the fabric and refreshes the impregnation. With plastic rear windows there is the added point that they must not be folded, because the crease stays permanently opaque.
The interior during storage
The interior needs one thing above all: nothing organic left inside. Crumbs, drink residue, a forgotten shopping bag, damp floor mats. Four months in a closed cabin turns any of those into odour.
Interior cleaning before storage makes sense, then complete drying, and then leaving the windows open a fraction if the garage is dry and secure. A little air exchange beats a fully sealed cabin. Leather should be conditioned before the break, because it gets no movement and no replenishment during it.
Garage, carport or outside?
What matters is not warm or cold but dry and ventilated. A cold, dry, ventilated garage beats a warm, damp one. The worst location is a closed, unventilated underground garage that wet cars drive into, because the humidity there stays high permanently.
If the car stands outside, a breathable cover is essential. A sealed plastic tarpaulin does not keep moisture out, it keeps it in, and condensation forms directly on the paint underneath.
Tyres, battery and technical points
Flat spots form when the car’s weight rests on the same part of the tyre for months. Slightly raised pressure noticeably reduces the risk, and putting the car on stands removes it entirely. On modern tyres flat spots usually work themselves out after a few kilometres, on older ones not always.
The battery discharges even at rest, because control units keep drawing current. A trickle charger is the simplest answer. Disconnecting works too, but on many cars costs stored settings.
Leave the handbrake off, or the pads can rust to the discs. A gear or park position plus chocks is the better route.
Fuel, oil and fluids
With fuel, fuller is better than emptier. A nearly empty tank has a large air volume, and condensation forms on its inner walls as temperatures cycle. The water collects at the bottom of the tank, exactly where the pump draws from. On cars with steel tanks it is a corrosion issue as well.
With engine oil, timing matters. Used oil contains combustion residue and acids, and those keep acting on bearings and seals during storage. If an oil change is due anyway, it belongs before the break, not after. Coolant and screenwash should be checked for frost protection, even in a garage, because an unheated garage can drop below zero on cold nights.
Should you start the car occasionally during storage?
Starting briefly and shutting off again is worse than not starting at all. The engine does not reach operating temperature in a few minutes, condensation in the exhaust does not evaporate, and unburnt fuel collects in the oil. If you want to move it, drive it properly warm for half an hour. If you cannot, leave it standing.
Martens and rodents
A point regularly forgotten at lay-up and expensive in spring. A stationary, warm car in a quiet garage is an attractive place for martens and mice. What gets damaged is ignition leads, insulation mats, hoses and increasingly the insulation on modern wiring looms.
Prevention is straightforward: no food residue in the interior, an engine bay handed over clean and low in odour, and where marten pressure in the garage is known, a mechanical or electronic deterrent. A proper engine bay cleaning before the break takes away the scent markings animals navigate by.
The most common mistakes, and what they cost in spring
We see four every year. The car goes in dirty, so bird droppings and sap have etched in by March and it needs polishing instead of a wash. It is covered while damp, so mildew appears on the roof or the upholstery. The roof is stored folded, so the creases stay. And the interior is not emptied, so spring starts with odour neutralisation.
None of these mistakes is expensive to avoid. All of them are expensive to fix.
Spring is part of the plan
Winter storage does not end in November. When bringing a car back out we check paint, roof, tyres and interior, wash off the dust of the storage period without dragging it across the paint, and refresh the protection. Plan both appointments together and you have a car that is ready to drive in spring rather than ready for reconditioning.
With classics and enthusiast cars there is the added point that classic car polishing is far easier to schedule in autumn than during the spring rush when everyone wants an appointment at once.
Conclusion
Well stored means clean, dry, protected, ventilated and free of organic residue. In that order. Four months of standing then does no damage.
Badly stored means the same dirt, the same moisture and the same load, just four months further in. The difference between the two is an afternoon of preparation in autumn.
