Preparing your car for winter
Autumn is a good time to prepare your car for winter. Rain, leaves and falling temperatures affect the paint and bodywork before the first snowfall. Damp leaves, pollen and other organic residue can leave marks where they sit on the paint. A thorough clean reveals which areas need further attention before winter.
Five care jobs before the first snowfall
- Assess and prepare the paint. After washing, check whether dull areas and light wash marks would benefit from polishing.
- Check the paint protection. A suitable paint sealant makes cleaning easier when salt and road grime build up.
- Clean the wheels. A thorough wheel clean removes residue from hard-to-reach areas as well as the visible faces.
- Clean the interior. An interior clean clears accumulated dirt from seats, carpets and mats.
- Prepare the glass. Clean windows are the starting point for good visibility. Glass protection can help rainwater run off.
Which steps are worthwhile depends on the car’s condition and how often you drive it in winter. Checking vulnerable areas before the first snow helps you plan the right care. For the rest of the year, see our guide to car care through the seasons.
