Caring for car tyres
What affects tyre life
Driving style, load, pressure, alignment, suspension condition, road surface, compound and storage all influence wear. High torque and repeated hard braking can accelerate it, while uneven wear may indicate alignment or mechanical issues.
Routine checks
- Set cold pressure to the vehicle specification for the current load.
- Inspect tread, cuts, bulges, cracking, embedded objects and uneven wear.
- Investigate vibration rather than assuming balancing is always the cause.
- Use seasonal tyres appropriate to actual conditions.
Swiss law requires at least 1.6 mm tread, while safety performance can decline earlier. Calendar age is relevant, but ten years is not permission to continue using a tyre that is damaged or unsuitable.
Rotation and cleaning
Rotate only according to the vehicle and tyre manufacturer’s pattern. Directional tyres, staggered sizes and different axle specifications may prevent cross-rotation.
Clean sidewalls with tyre-safe products. Dressing is cosmetic and applied away from tread and brakes; it does not keep structural rubber safe indefinitely.
Storage
Store clean tyres in a cool, dry, dark place away from fuels, solvents, ozone and heat. Position and pressure follow the tyre or wheel provider’s guidance.
Professional storage can add condition checks and convenience, but insurance and exact storage terms should be confirmed rather than assumed.
AVP’s in-house service can inspect, change and document tyres as part of seasonal maintenance.
