Removing tree sap from car paint
Natural resin has many industrial uses, from adhesives and coatings to specialist food production. On modern automotive paint, however, tree sap is a form of contamination that should be addressed promptly.
Parking in the shade is attractive during summer, but damaged branches can release sap onto the vehicle. As volatile components evaporate and the residue oxidises, it becomes harder and more difficult to remove without affecting the surface beneath it.
The right treatment depends on how long the sap has been present, the paint condition and any previous protection. Scraping or experimenting with aggressive household solvents can scratch, soften or stain the finish.
At AVP, resin removal starts with washing the affected area. Loose dirt must be removed first so later contact does not drag abrasive particles over the paint.
The specialist then selects the least aggressive suitable method. Fresh contamination may respond to a paint-safe resin remover and controlled dwell time. Advice found online sometimes recommends petrol, lock de-icer or other strong solvents; these products can affect paint and plastics and should not be used without confirming compatibility.
Older, hardened deposits may require carefully controlled warmth and repeated treatment. Heat should only be used by someone who understands the paint system, as excessive temperature can cause permanent damage.
Paint protection can make later cleaning easier and reduce direct contact between contamination and the clear coat, but it does not make a vehicle immune to tree sap. Deposits should still be removed promptly and the protection inspected afterwards.
