An automatic car wash is quick and convenient, but can place unnecessary strain on the paint. A careful hand wash takes more time and gives you far greater control over the result.

Begin by rinsing the entire vehicle with plenty of water. Removing loose dust and grit before touching the surface is essential, as dragging these particles across the paint can create scratches.

Use a clean wash mitt or suitable sponge together with enough automotive shampoo. Work methodically and rinse the tool frequently. Details such as number plates, lower edges and transitions are easy to overlook, so include them deliberately.

Rinse the car again, then dry it with a clean, paint-safe drying towel to reduce water spotting. After washing, a short drive can help dry the brake discs, provided road and traffic conditions allow.
