Protect people and animals first

A parked cabin can heat rapidly. Never leave a child or animal in a warm vehicle, even for a short stop or with a window partly open.

Paint and interior materials

Modern paint is designed for outdoor exposure, but UV, contamination and repeated heat still contribute to ageing. Compatible protection can support gloss; shade and prompt contaminant removal also help.

Remove batteries, aerosols and heat-sensitive electronics from the cabin where their instructions warn against high temperatures. A windscreen shade can reduce direct solar load.

Cooling system and warning signs

Check coolant only according to the owner’s manual and never open a hot pressurised system. A temperature warning, steam or loss of power requires a safe stop and the vehicle-specific procedure; continued driving can cause severe engine damage.

Parking in the sun alone should not overheat a switched-off sound engine. Overheating while driving usually signals load, airflow, coolant or component issues that need diagnosis.

Tyres and pressure

Set cold tyre pressure to the vehicle specification, accounting for load where instructed. Do not add an arbitrary 0.1 or 0.2 bar because the weather is hot, and do not bleed pressure from a hot tyre.

Inspect tread, damage and age before long journeys. Underinflation, overloading and existing damage increase heat stress.

Fuel and air conditioning

Stop refuelling when the pump automatically clicks off; do not top up into the expansion space. Fuel spilled on paint should be rinsed promptly and safely.

Weak cooling, unusual noise or odour can justify air-conditioning service. Use the system normally according to the manufacturer rather than relying on a universal weekly exercise rule.
