Hand wash or automatic car wash: Which is gentler on paint?
Modern automatic car washes have become gentler. Even so, heavily soiled cars can still pick up fine wash marks. In autumn and winter especially, salt, grit and road grime collect on the bodywork. Dragging those particles across the paint can leave fine scratches.
The pre-wash makes the difference
A professional hand wash lets us treat heavily soiled areas individually. This is useful along the sills, at the rear and around the wheel arches. Loose particles are rinsed away before the main wash begins with clean wash materials. That sequence helps reduce the risk of fine scratches.
How often is a hand wash worthwhile?
The right interval depends on how the car is used. If you often drive on wet or salted roads, remove the build-up regularly. This is easier on a well-maintained, protected finish. Careful cleaning helps preserve the paint’s gloss. Our guide to common car-care mistakes covers other habits that can leave marks during washing.
