Prepare the vehicle

Use tyres suited to the expected conditions and check tread, pressure, lighting, battery condition, wipers and winter-compatible fluids. Swiss safety guidance recommends replacing winter tyres before they reach 4 mm of tread, even though the legal minimum is lower.

Carry an ice scraper, gloves and journey-specific emergency equipment. Snow chains belong on routes or in conditions where required, and fitting them is easier after practising in advance.

Clear the vehicle before moving

Remove snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, lamps, the roof and other surfaces from which it could fall. Keep number plates and required markings visible.

Drive for the available grip

Reduce speed, increase following distance and use smooth steering, acceleration and braking. Avoid relying on one universal gear or recovery technique: follow the vehicle handbook, especially for automatic, electric and all-wheel-drive systems.

If the vehicle begins to lose grip, look where you need to go, avoid abrupt inputs and allow the stability systems to work. Conditions can change quickly on bridges, shaded roads and compressed snow.

Visibility remains non-negotiable

Use the correct lighting for the conditions and stop safely if snow, ice or washer failure prevents a clear view.

Current road signs, chain requirements and local regulations take precedence over generic winter advice.
