What is a ceramic coating?

Automotive ceramic coatings are typically silica-based products that cure into a thin functional layer on compatible prepared paint. They can add water repellency, gloss and resistance to some environmental contamination.

They do not prevent yellowing, scratches, stone chips or chemical etching altogether.

Ceramic and “nano” terminology

“Nano” is a broad marketing and chemistry term, not one standard product category. Ceramic coatings often offer greater durability than spray sealants, but neither forms a permanent three-dimensional shield or fills paint defects.

Practical benefits

  • some contamination releases more readily;
  • water behaviour and gloss can remain more consistent;
  • regular maintenance may take less effort;
  • durability can be multi-year where the product and care support it.

Normal shampoo, safe contact washing and drying remain necessary. Coating does not stop car-wash brushes from marking paint or make insects and brake dust disappear automatically.

Professional or self-applied?

Consumer products can work when instructions, preparation and curing are followed. Professional application adds controlled correction, lighting, environmental conditions and quality checks; it does not make every result perfect by definition.

Choose from evidence

AVP identifies the exact product, treated surfaces, expected durability, maintenance and written warranty. Three-to-five-year claims apply only where that system’s documentation and use support them.

A coating is worthwhile when its care profile fits the owner, not because it guarantees resale value or freedom from future polishing.
